David W. Thomas focuses his practice on issues of corporate and commercial law, handling everything from complex commercial litigation and employment counseling/litigation to corporate governance and financing. A member of MichieHamlett’s Commercial Group, David has experience in business, real estate, construction and professional litigation, small business formation, counseling employers on federal and state employment law issues, corporate and non-profit governance, and start-up and expansion financing. David was selected as a Virginia Rising Star in in 2013 and 2014 by Super Lawyers, and has taught Trial Advocacy at the University of Virginia School of Law since 2009.
Prior to joining MichieHamlett in 2008, David clerked in federal district court and practiced antitrust and securities litigation for a national technology-focused law firm and in litigation for a national mass tort and products liability litigation boutique.A native of Virginia, David attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (Alexandria, VA) before matriculating to Swarthmore College (Philadelphia, PA), where he played varsity football and baseball, club rugby, and was a member of the mock trial and debate teams. After graduating magna cum laude in Political Science and Economics, David attended the University of Virginia School of Law, serving as the chancellor of the William Minor Lile Moot Court Competition.
David is active in the Charlottesville community, where he serves on the Board of Directors of the Ronald McDonald House, President of the UVaClub of Charlottesville, the Leadership Charlottesville Alumni Association (Class of 2010), and was a member of the Board of Directors o the Albemarle County Service Authority. Within the legal community, David is a member of the 7th District Disciplinary Committee of the Virginia State Bar, the Bench-Bar Committee of the Charlottesville Albemarle Bar Association (Secretary/Treasurer, 2009-2010), and is a member of the Virginia Bar Association, Virginia Trial Lawyers Association, and the Thomas Jefferson American Inn of Court.
