Class-Action Lawsuit Filed Against Law Firm Who Illegally Profits From Mass Evictions Across Virginia
MichieHamlett Attorneys at Law attorneys Kyle McNew and Bryan Slaughter, along with co-counsel from the Legal Aid Justice Center and Legal Aid Society of Roanoke, filed a federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act class action lawsuit against Senex Law on September 9, 2020. Senex is a debt collection law firm that has been integral to the high rate of evictions in Virginia. In a study done by Eviction Lab and published in the New York Times, five out of the top ten jurisdictions that had the highest eviction rates in the nation were in Virginia – in cities and counties where Senex primarily operates.
This is the second lawsuit filed against Senex for violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act in their mass eviction filings against Virginia tenants. The lawsuit describes Senex’s extensive efforts to circumvent the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act and the resulting harm caused to those struggling to pay their rent due to financial hardship and the strain caused by the ongoing pandemic.
